Ingemeng – A Community-Centred Exploration of Identity, Healing, and Belonging
Ingemeng, a new play by Ameera Conrad, was developed at 20 Stories High in 2024, with support from Actors’ Touring Company and Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse.
During its development, Ingemeng explored powerful themes including intergenerational trauma carried by women—tracing legacies of slavery, migration, and displacement—alongside feminine rage, healing, self-love, and the strength found in community. At its heart was a personal and political reflection on identity, rooted in Ameera’s own experiences:
Building on the energy and insight of the R&D, we worked with the local community to continue this exploration. Through a series of creative writing workshops, adults and young people from immigrant backgrounds (first, second and third generation) were invited to share their journeys, advice, and reflections through poetry and letter writing.
We’re proud to present a new booklet featuring some of the amazing writing created during these sessions. The collection includes work by Shannon Naughton-May, Telema Jack, Tracy Dunn, Fatima Sharif Ali, Beth Hollihead, Leonora Kawa, Windsor Primary students, Kings Leadership Academy students, Leonisha Barley and Ameera Conrad.
