Biography

Laurence’s first professional work as a writer was a trilogy of short plays called Surf’s Up, produced in 2001 at Unity Theatre Liverpool and 2002 at Contact Theatre, Manchester. They were nominated for two Manchester Evening News Awards; Best New Play and Best Production. Laurence then wrote Mezz’ed Up, which was a Liverpool Lunchtime Theatre commission for the Unity Theatre and Drug Runner’s for Bravo Channel, which was the channels first commissioned original drama.

Laurence’s first full-length play, Urban Legend, was produced at the Liverpool Everyman in 2004 and was published the same year by Oberon Modern Plays. Urban Legend won the Liverpool Daily Post Play of the Year Award.

Laurence became Pearson Writer in Residence at Liverpool Everyman Theatre 2005 – 2006, and received a full commission to write a new stage play. During this time, he wrote Dark Tayle which was a twenty minute short play commissioned by Menagerie Theatre for the Hotbed New Writing Festival, 2006, and ran at The Junction Theatre Cambridge.

For radio, Tin Man aired on BBC Radio 3 (The Wire) in January 2007 and was shortlisted for the Imosen Award in 2008. Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band aired June 2007 on Radio 4, which was part of the BBC’s celebration of the 40th anniversary of The Beatles album of the same name. In the Summer of 2007, Laurence created a play through workshops in conjunction with the NCH and Young Girls at Risk at Wellsbourne Primary School, Broadgreen Liverpool, called When Worlds Collide.

In 2008, he wrote two plays for the Everyword Festival: Circulatory System and The Everyghost. Further projects include Spirits of Legend and Lost Monsters, which both played at The Liverpool Everyman.
