Beats and Bars at FireFit Hub

If you’d have walked past FireFit Hub in Toxteth, Liverpool on a Thursday evening during the past few months, you’d have noticed more than the usual basketball and table tennis taking place…

We’ve been working with Associate Artist Martin Stannage (aka MC Visceral) and the young people at the FireFit youth club teaching mic skills, basic beat boxing skills as well as lyric and song writing every Thursday through February, March and April. Firefit Hub is Liverpool’s only ‘Super Youth Zone’, a state-of-the-art facility for young people offering sports, music and culture reflective of the diverse community it serves… and it’s right on our doorstep too.

Supported by our RTYDS placement Paislie Reid (as well as some of our talented musicians and singers from our Young Actors Company), Martin has been facilitating a lively drop in session with a brilliant hip hop vibe bringing beats and bars to the atrium at FireFit.

And to celebrate their achievements, the young people shared some of their new skills in a freestyle jam session with 20 Stories High young people and staff as well as the staff at FireFit Hub – including a cameo performance by Youth Zone Leader Lisa Smith, who impressed with her lyrical flow on the mic!

But credit must go to the amazing Josh Enakpoma who wrote and recorded a whole new track with Martin called ‘We Could All Do More’: an inspiring call to action in a troubled world (if you’ve got your speakers on you’ll be hearing it now).We were blown away by his skill, passion and creativity and we’re certain it’s not the last we’ll be seeing of this talented guy.
